No heat or no cooling right now? The emergency line is answered by a person, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Call 000-000-0000
A water heater gives very little warning. A rusty streak at a fitting, a rumble when it fires, or an inch of water on the basement floor at six in the morning — and by then the decision is being made under pressure, which is exactly when people get sold the wrong thing.
So the useful conversation happens before it fails. If yours is over ten years old, the anode has probably gone and the tank is now on borrowed time. Ten minutes of planning turns a flooded basement into a scheduled morning.
What we install
Four options, and the right one depends on your venting, your gas capacity and how much hot water the household actually uses at once.
Conventional gas tank
The straightforward replacement. Fast, economical, and the correct answer in most Queens houses with a sound flue.
Direct-vent and power-vent gas
Where the chimney cannot be used — including when a new condensing furnace has left the water heater orphaned on a flue too large for it.
Tankless on demand
Endless hot water and a much smaller footprint, but it needs a larger gas line, dedicated venting and annual descaling in New York's water. We will tell you honestly whether your building suits one.
Heat pump water heaters
Two to three times the efficiency of a conventional electric tank, and eligible for incentives. They need space, air and a condensate drain, so a cramped closet is not the place for one.
The orphaned water heater problem
This is the most commonly botched part of a heating upgrade in this city, and it is a safety issue rather than a comfort one.
What happens
Your furnace and water heater shared a masonry chimney. The furnace is replaced with a condensing unit that vents through the wall. The water heater is now alone on a flue sized for two appliances.
Why it matters
A flue that is too large for the appliance on it will not establish draught properly. The exhaust cools, condenses inside the chimney, and can spill combustion products — including carbon monoxide — into the basement.
How it is fixed
Either a correctly sized stainless liner down the existing chimney, or a power-vent or direct-vent water heater that vents independently through the wall.
What we do
We check for this on every furnace quote and price the fix in the same project. We will not leave a house in this condition and call the job finished.
Getting more life out of the one you have
Three things, and the first one is genuinely the whole game.
Check the anode rod
It is a sacrificial metal rod that corrodes so the tank does not. Replacing it at five or six years can double the life of the tank, and almost nobody does it.
Flush the sediment
Especially on gas tanks, where sediment sits on the bottom over the burner and turns into the rumbling noise and a lot of wasted gas.
Test the relief valve
The temperature and pressure relief valve is the safety that stops a water heater becoming a serious incident. It should be tested annually and it takes a minute.
If you smell gas, leave the building and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside — do not operate switches on your way out. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone into fresh air and call 911 first. General guidance on this page is not a substitute for a licensed technician looking at your own equipment.
Questions
Water Heaters — the questions we are asked most
How long does a water heater last?
Eight to twelve years for a conventional tank in New York water, and longer if the anode rod has been replaced along the way. Tankless units run fifteen to twenty with annual descaling. If yours is past ten, plan the replacement rather than waiting for the basement floor to tell you.
Can you replace a water heater the same day?
Usually yes on common residential sizes — we carry 40 and 50 gallon gas tanks. Power-vent, tankless and heat pump units generally need to be ordered, and tankless installations need a gas and venting assessment first.
Is tankless worth it?
If you run out of hot water regularly or you need the floor space, yes. If your gas line needs upsizing and your venting has to be rebuilt, the payback stretches out a long way. New York water is hard enough that annual descaling is not optional, and that is a real running cost. We will give you a straight answer for your building.
My water heater is making a rumbling noise. Is that serious?
It is sediment on the bottom of the tank boiling under the burner. Not immediately dangerous, but it wastes gas, overheats the steel and shortens the tank's life. A flush helps if it is caught early enough.
What is an orphaned water heater?
One left alone on a chimney that was sized for it plus a furnace, after the furnace has been replaced with a sidewall-vented condensing unit. The oversized flue will not draw properly, which can spill combustion products into the house. It needs a liner or a different venting arrangement, and we check for it on every furnace quote.
Do heat pump water heaters qualify for rebates?
Frequently, through utility and state efficiency programmes and federal credits. They need a reasonably sized space with air movement and a condensate drain, so they suit a basement rather than a closet. We will confirm what your project qualifies for.
